Commemorative Ceremonies
in Honor of Major Arthur N. Nicholson
in Germany on 24 March 2005
and Arlington Cemetery on 26 March 2005
There will be TWO commemorative ceremonies that will mark the 20th anniversary of the shooting by a Soviet sentry of Major Arthur D. Nicholson, Jr. in Ludwigslust.
All veterans of USMLM, BRIXMIS, and MMFL and friends of the Missions are cordially invited to attend either/both, as schedules and means permit.
1. Ludwigslust. The Allied Museum-Berlin will unveil a memorial stone in Ludwigslust at 1100 hours (local time) on 24 March 2005 (Holy Thursday); at a turnoff from the B-191 onto the former subcaliber range.
Major General Roland Lajoie, Ret. and representatives from the US Embassy will attend as will German Government and local authorities from the Bundeswehr, Ludwigslust and Karstaedt. See the Allied Museum-Berlin announcement and details at their web site http://www.alliiertenmuseum.de/en/4_1.php?year=&activity_id=110. See also maps and photographs of the Ludwigslust site.
We strongly encourage USMLM veterans/friends living or stationed in Europe to attend this ceremony and ask that potential attendees contact L. G. Kelley () to coordinate the details (e.g., numbers, quarters, local transportation). Should interest warrant, it may be possible to arrange additional activities beforehand or afterwards.
2. Arlington. This year, the annual graveside ceremony in Arlington will occur at 1100 hours (local time) on 26 March 2005 (Holy Saturday). Those desiring to participate are requested to gather directly at Nick's grave, which is #171 in Section 7A. Consistent with our practice of the past two decades, we will gather together with friends and family to remember Nick, say a few words (tentatively General Govan), offer a prayer (Tom Wyckoff), and play taps. A no-host lunch will follow at the Key Bridge Marriott. Send questions to: ."
Regards,
L. G. Kelley
